THE COLLEGE GIRL'S GUIDE TO MAKEUP FOR CLASS

The middle of the semester is here and tests, quizzes and papers are becoming a normal part of the weekly routine, not to mention football games, work, and that little thing called sleep. Whew! With all this stuff going on, it can be really easy to let things like a makeup routine go by the wayside. Today I'm going to show you a really quick routine that will make you look wide awake and pulled together for that 9 a.m. math class. Did I mention it will take less than five minutes?

Tinted Moisturizer:

Tinted moisturizer is a college girl's best friend. It’s perfect because you can smooth it onto your face during the morning rush to class. Try to find one with SPF so that you get sun protection as well as a light coverage. I find that a tinted moisturizer is perfect for taking the redness out of my cheeks without looking completely made up for class. This one from Clinique gives skin a healthy glow, and the Aveeno tinted moisturizer is available at most drugstores as well!

Peachy, pink blush:

Blush is one of those products that really makes a huge difference in a little amount of time. All you have to do is sweep the shade on the apples of your cheeks and you instantly look radiant. Pink shades are the most universally flattering, but peach shades look give you a natural glow as well. Try blushes from brands like MAC, Benefit, Maybelline and NYX. Each brand offers a wide variety of formulas and colors. Our favorite? Beach blush from Cargo.

Eye shadow:

You don't have to get crazy and put six different shades on your eyes for class, but you can sweep a light shimmery brown shade across your lids for added dimension. You'll never have to hear the words, "you look tired" when you use this trick. If you're really in a rush, you don't even need to use a brush to apply this, just dab on the shimmery shade with your ring finger. MAC make some really great shimmery shades, but Physician's Formula and Covergirl offer some nude shades as well. A great affordable option is the Coastal Scents Original Palette.

Lengthening mascara:

If you only have time for one thing in the morning, mascara should be at the top of your list. It also helps to curl your lashes because it really opens up tired eyes. Mascara adds a subtle definition that's enough to give you the confidence to wink at the cutie in calculus without the added step of eye liner. I love drugstore mascaras because mascara has one of the shortest shelf lives cosmetics-wise (3 months, ladies!) It makes more sense to search for a less expensive option if you're going to be buying mascara four times a year. Maybelline Volum'express mascara and Covergirl LashBlast mascara are top choices.

Tinted Lip Balm:

Okay ladies, a show of hands: how many of you have gotten your hair caught in your lip gloss on your way to class? Been there, done that! Then on top of that, you have to make the super-flattering motion of getting your hair out of the said lipgloss. Has anyone else noticed that lip gloss acts like super-glue on hair? Just me? A tinted lip balm is the perfect solution to this common problem. The tint gives you color like a gloss, without the stickiness factor. Burt's Bee's makes great tinted balms in several colors.

Men makup

Makeup and skin care products are not just for women anymore. Men have officially jumped on the beauty bandwagon with a wide variety of products specifically packaged and marketed for a man’s needs. From skin care creams and lotions that target anti-aging to makeup products that help conceal the under eye area or other skin issues, and powder that helps fight oiliness there is a rather long list of makeup and beauty products available for men, and it seems like they may be here to stay. So let’s look at some of the top makeup products for men, so you don’t end up spending money where it’s not needed.

The world’s first official concealing product for men, the CAMO concealer resembles a man’s lip balm tube which keeps it very discreet from criticizing eyes. Menaji states that the CAMO stick is specially formulated to work with the higher oil production that may come from a man’s skin. The Jojoba-based formula is fragrance-free, hypo-allregenic, dermatologist approved, and contains vitamins and SPF8. The concealer comes in three shades, and can be used to cover the under eye area, age spots, blemishes, razor bumps, and more. Of course, as with any concealer you could also use it as a spot foundation to give your skin an all-around even tone
.

A step beyond a regular concealer, the Men Pen is larger and is meant to cover more areas. Although it resembles a woman’s stick foundation the Men Pen comes in 16 different shades and can easily be smoothed onto your skin for quick coverage where-needed. So basically the main use is to even out the skin tone and cover imperfections such as blemishes, pores, scars, moles, bumps, razor burn, and more. The Men Pen has actually been showcased at variouscelebrity events, and has been seen on The Rachel Ray Show, Today Show.com, and in magazines such as Washintonian. As a bonus, if you don’t like the product they offer a full refund with no questions asked.

If you’re going to wear powder then you should definitely reach for a high definition formula. Menaji’s HDPV Anti-Shine Powder works hard as an HD powder while also controlling shine and evening your skin tone. The kicker is that Menaji states that it is "undetectable under the harshest conditions". So if you want to have that flawless skin look, whether on TV or not, then this powder should be a must-have. As a bonus it’s also formulated with vitamins C and E, contains SPF15, comes in four shades, and is housed in a manlier black compact.

If you think that using a styling glaze on your brows is not right for you then reach for a brow corrector instead. KenMen’s correctors are very subtle, and simply allow you to define your brows better or fill in gaps with ease. The bonus is that they can also be used to fill in areas in facial hair as well, so if you love your mustache or beard but it’s starting to thin then you can use the Brow & Beard Corrector to achieve the look of fullness again. The packaging is more masculine than a woman’s brow pencil, and it comes in three versatile shades.

We’ve all seen the men with the batwing and out of control eyebrows. Well with a little grooming and an application or two of 4 VOO’s Lash and Brow Styling Glaze their unruly brows will be back in line in a snap. Even if your brows aren’t out of control, the 4 VOO formula will give them a slight pop while keeping them in-check. It can also be used on lashes to add length, thickness and control while conditioning at the same time. The Lash and Brow Styling Glaze is available in clear or black, but the packaging isn’t sleek and black; instead it looks more like a Clinique mascara tube.

Most men won’t wear a tinted lip product, and there is at least one available, so instead of skimping on great lips you need to reach for a man-based lip balm. Jack Black’s Intense Therapy Lip Balm contains SPF25, shea butter, vitamin E, green tea extract, and avocado oil to help your lips stay safe from the sun yet soft and kissable at the same time. The Jack Black line actually offers a variety of flavors in their lip balm, but if you are only in it for the moisture then we would suggest the regular lip balm. The package is slightly manlier by showcasing a dark blue tube, but if you don’t feel comfortable carrying it with you then you can at least use it at home so your lips don’t feel like scales to your significant other.

Makeup Tips for Men

If you're a guy and wish wear makeup, you're not alone. In fact, many men secretly wear it every day, they just don't broadcast it. In today's society, it doesn't make you less of a man, it may help you cover flaws and enhance your finer features. You don't have to be an actor or movie star to wear makeup. Both meterosexuals and so-called "he men" also enjoy the benefits.
More and more men are discovering what women knew all along; it boosts your self-esteem when you look your best. Some cosmetics companies are cashing in on a whole line of skin care creams and makeup, specifically for men, and they're buying it.
Popularity aside, the trick is to know the look you want and apply it accordingly. We're not suggesting that you wear all of the makeup listed below. Pick and choose the cosmetics that will work best for the look you're trying to achieve and do some experimenting. Remember to buy matte varieties and avoid frosts and glitter, unless you want to look like a girly man.

Foundation

Wearing foundation helps cover imperfections, flaws and pimples. If you have a beard, it's not recommended because it tends to look inconsistent and leaves unwanted residue on whiskers. If you have facial hair, you can use a concealer instead, to hide spots and blemishes.
Since most men have larger pores than women, they clog up easier. An oil-based foundation may make you prone to breakouts and zits, so look for a type that is water-based and thin. Apply it sparingly, one application only. Remember, blending is key, so rub it into your hairline and neck to avoid lines that will give telltale signs that you're wearing makeup.

Tinted Moisterizer

If you're squeamish about wearing foundation, opt for a tinted moisturizer which will soften your skin after shaving and add a touch of color or tan. If you can't find a brand for guys, you can look in the women's section, but beware of finding one that will add shine or sparkles to your skin. Look for a basic moisturizer with a light tint and no frills. Again, find one that will compliment your skin tone, not change it.

Powder

Bright lights and warm temperatures have a tendency to make skin look shiny and clammy. The main purpose of powder is to take away the shine, which is very important to those who work on stage or a photo shoot. For a natural look, forego the foundation and wear powder only. When you apply it, focus on areas that are the most shiny; your forehead, nose, and chin.
Popular choices for powder include pressed (in a compact) and loose. Pressed powder will come with a powder puff (for lack of better term) for easy application. Loose powder is best applied with a large makeup brush, which is, most often, not included. Powder is available in different shades of color or translucent, meaning no color is added.

Eyeliner / Guyliner

If you want a gothic look, using wearing eyeliner is oh-so effective. Rock stars like Joel Madden and Billie Joe Armstrong pull it off well. Generally, if you have a masculine face, you'll want to apply it lightly.
Use a black eye pencil to draw a subtle line underneath your lower eyelashes. Blend in the edges for a more natural look. If you have light or blonde lashes, you can use black mascara to match. If your skin is pale, tone it down and choose dark brown or brownish/black eyeliner. Don't overdo it or it will look messy rather than appealing.
Once you're comfortable, you can try your own style to make a statement. If you want less dramatic features, use the eye pencil to fill in spaces between your eyelashes. This will make them appear thicker and fuller.

Mascara

Unless you wear dark eyeliner, you don't need to wear color-enhanced mascara. If you do, one coat will suit you fine. Use as little as possible to avoid clumps and flaking.
Clear mascara is an ideal choice for men. It will lengthen lashes and give them volume. Another added benefit is that if it smears, it won't show because it's nearly impossible to see. Clear mascara also doubles as an eyebrow comb to keep strays in place.

Lip Balm / Lipstick

Wear lipstick only with a rocker style. Even then, you should wear it at your own discretion. Usually, lighter tones look unflattering on guys, so stick with dark shades that enhance your own lip color. If you want to look natural, wear a clear lip balm for a bit of kissable shine and protection from weather.

Virtual acting tips

I figured a reasonable follow up to the previous post (before I go into more demo recording info) would be to post a little info regarding virtual acting, I asked SigmaSin whom will probably have the most screen time in ‘A Soldiers Revenge, and whom I’ve to both have a bit of a knack for being a reliable, consistent virtual actor. I asked for some tips for the blog, and here they are:
Alright, here goes.
The most important elements being a virtual actor are that you must be polite and patient. If you can do that, you’re already a good candidate to act. I’ll go into more detail on this, and give some extraneous tips learned from working with SaDOS on his latest piece.
1. Do as your director tells you
It’s the vision of the director you’re trying to create here. No matter how nitpicky he gets, oblige, it all goes to creating a quality piece of work.
2. Ask questions only when the director is done speaking
Chances are, the question you are asking will be answered by the director’s description of the scene. If it isn’t, by allowing him to finish talking, you keep a more coherent picture of the scene, and it’s no problem to go and sort out a particular detail afterwards.
3. Ask questions
By doing so, you improve your understanding of the scene you’re trying to create, and possibly increase the quality over what the director had in mind. “Hey, what if we moved the soldier to the medic’s right hand side, so the rocket launcher and healing beam don’t take too much prominence?”
4. Be quiet
Posing, voice taunts, running around, shooting, talking… all of these are bad ideas while the film is rolling. Even if you aren’t anywhere near the set (not in the shot), these noises can ruin the recording and require a reshoot. Also, doing this while scenes are being explained should be avoided. Bullet holes or blast marks on set are a pain, and require spamming shots in other parts of the map to get rid of them. This is annoying, takes up time, and may ruin another set to be used. Also, the noise can get distracting when trying to explain a scene. Just be mature, sit, and listen.
5. Run through your parts
When you have a couple specific marks to hit during a scene such that you are framed properly, run your path a few times before you go for it in scene. Remember that while recording, it’s better to be off the mark a bit than to correct it, but you want to be as close as possible. So, knowing your path is a good thing. This also applies to looking – practice the look a bit, then when shooting, just try to do it in one mouse motion. Even if you miss, stay where you ended up looking. It will appear better than if you try to correct it.
6. Crouch to get in to place
If you need to stand in a specific spot for a scene, crouch and move to it to fine-tune where you’ll be standing.
7. Explode off set
When you’re dying or taking damage in a scene, between shoots, use the explode command 1-2 times off set. This cleans up the blood and removes corpses. Shooting off set removes bullet holes and blast marks, but takes a lot longer.
8. Use the third person view
When a TF2 server has sv_cheats set to 1, you can type “thirdperson” in to console to get a view of your character from behind. This lets you control your actions a lot better, since you see what is seen on camera: you can tell when you’re clipping, you can tell when you’re not moving smoothly, etc. I would always recommend this unless the scene requires you to do something you need particular skill in game to do (hit a moving target, rocket jump). I would not recommend using the thirdperson variants unless you need them specifically (thirdperson_mayamode, thirdperson_platformer). The view is most intuitive with the basic settings, if you change it, you may find it difficult to move, and difficult to get back to a normal third person view.
9. Adjust your sensitivity
Usually, smooth movements are required, unlike in game, where you want to be as quick as possible. Consider turning on the mouse filter, or lowering your sensitivity (particularly if you have a scene where you have to look somewhere slowly). If you’re required to do things quickly, use the sensitivity you’re most accustomed to from the game.
10. Mess around in the skybox
It helps a lot if you’re getting frustrated or bored to blow off some steam. Build gigantic sentries, get screenshots of capture-point-sized giblets, what have you. After a few hours of shooting, slow motion no clip air melee battles for 15 minutes can really hit the spot. Also, something you do may give your director an idea for a shot.

Do You Have What it Takes To Be An Actor

First, a warning: be very clear not to confuse this question with “How do I know if I will be a success?” “Have what it takes” refers to ability to act. Ability may or may not lead to success.
A story before we dive into “what it takes” vs. “success.”
A young child raised in the rural south dreamed of singing opera. Life just didn’t quite work out that way. But the dream persisted and the self yearned to sing its song. Then, years later all alone in a spotlight on a darkened Off-Broadway stage, sitting on a “boulder” night after night, she sang an exquisite song about the birds in Ireland. The dream was filled. The self was filled. No, not Casta Diva or Lucia’s Mad Scene. But her song. The idea of “success” was not compromised. It was just allowed to change. Let the self dictate the meaning of success. Not money and fame but the joy of the action.
The simple truth is you can’t tell if you have the ability. To repeat what has been said in these articles a dozen times: talent is not the sole element that determines success. You may have enough talent to be an actor, but even great talent cannot guarantee success.
Success is a fickle mistress. There are many working or even wealthy actors who really cannot act. There are many brilliant actors who never get work. The most anyone can say is that there are basics that are usually required in order to be an actor.
If this sounds like hedging, you are absolutely right. Why? Most of us are not going to make the Fortune 500 list by acting. Statistically the odds are stacked against anyone becoming a star, or even making a good living in this profession. Yes, we all know inspiring success-against-all-odds stories. But we know those stories precisely because they are the exceptions.
Wisdom dictates that if there is anything else in the world that interests you, then do that instead of acting. If on the other hand, acting is a passion, something you must do, then you almost have no choice. Let the joy of acting be the payment, if you never sign a million dollar film contract. Money almost doesn’t matter if the passion for the art is a volcano.
After all that tip-toeing, let’s now look at what I personally think it takes to be an actor. (Remember, this is just one person’s opinion.)
1. A GOOD EAR
Yes, to me this is the most important requirement. In order to make a sentence that someone else wrote sound real, an actor must be able to hear what people sound like when they talk naturally.
A good ear will eventually pull you up and whisper, “Hey, that sounds actory. This line needs to be said in a different way.” Yes, yes we all know about dipping inside oneself to search for emotions. But some of the best “dippers” do not sound real.
Sounding real demands a good ear and the good sense to know when what you have said doesn’t sound “right.” The minute a student says to me, “That didn’t sound right,” then I know there is hope that that person has the ability to become a good actor.
2. THE ABILITY TO READ, AND AN ACTIVE IMAGINATION
No, no, no–not read “Pat the Fat Cat” or “War and Peace.” The reading referred to here consists of seeing implications when you read, of seeing what a character is really like–based on evidence from the script, text, book. Learn to read!
Become dedicated to reading the words, phrases, the text and mining them for the gold that is there. Too many times we bump into an unknown word in the script and do not bother looking it up. Too many titles or even the names of characters are not Googled.
Subtleties are lost because a reader/actor without a knowledge of plays, poems, myth, novels, satire, allusions, themes, imagery, language connotations cannot deliver a line with all the undercurrents in his voice. Something as basic as parallels and opposites are missed, leading to misdelivery of a line. The inability to read/understand a line inevitably leads to a superficial line reading. Every day you hear on TV, on film, in rehearsals, in performances, an emphasis on the wrong word, the direct result of not knowing what is being stated in the text. Learn to read. Learn to research.
The very best undergrad training for an actor is to major in English and minor in drama. Your advanced courses in literature will both teach you about people and about feelings AND teach you how to read the undercurrents of what is not being written. Poetry will heighten your sense of language and rhythm, two essentials for an actor. The imagination, loosened by lots of reading, then helps you to see new possibilities in the meaning and delivery of a line in a script. Reading for implications, reading beneath the surface, stretches the imagination.
3. THE ABILITY TO HANDLE REJECTION
Depression, rejection, and insecurity reign in this profession. We do not get up every morning and have a secure job to go to. Some people thrive on that freedom and luxuriate in that insecurity. Most of us don’t.
So we need to have or to be taught to find a still, solid, total belief in self. Ego. Confidence. Self-assurance. Presence. Call it what you wish. But to survive we must have some shield to protect us from the constant rejection. The difficulty is to stay in touch with the inner self while protecting that inner self from attack in the form of rejection.
We have written many times of the need for energy, joy, vitality–all these find their roots in a solid ego. That ego, that belief in self, is the third element in the triad which determines if one has what it takes to be an actor.
GRAB BAG REQUIREMENTS:
These are almost self-explanatory, but deserve mentioning.
Be reliable (on time for appointments, interviews, auditions, rehearsals).
Be responsible (memorize your lines).
Learn to control your temper. In other words, be pleasant in spite of…
Don’t be “high maintenance.”
Take care of your health.
Eat and sleep properly.
Get out of relationships that drain and destroy. If your parents are sore spots, get over it.
If there are physical things about yourself which you don’t like, fix them or learn to live with them gracefully. Get in touch with your intuition and learn to trust it. Get good training and if the class or teacher makes you feel awful, get out of it!
Surround yourself with people who have hope and happiness.
Develop the traits mentioned above and you increase the possibilities of being a success because you have what it takes.
Well, as the great American philosopher Porky Pig said, “That’s all, folks!” Now who would have thought a stuttering pig would become a star????
By Ruth Kulerman
PS: To repeat: You can have none of these requirements and be successful (not likely, though, but possible). You can have all of them and never be a star. The question should not be, “Do I have what it takes?” It should be, “How powerful is my drive to succeed?” And that answer comes from the face in your mirror.

The products I talk about are available at drug stores at sale prices to create a Naturally Pretty, Everyday look that is Inexpensive, Classy, and Easy for Every Girl to apply! These Products are all less than 10$ each, affordable in the College Girls Budget! Theres no reason buying high priced items at a cosmetic counter, where prices of Products can be nearly double or triple drug store prices! Being Financially Responsible is just as Important as being Beautiful, and Being Yourself!
Face Wash:  Apply makeup to a Clean Face! Always take your makeup off at night to avoid blemishes!
*Philosophy’s Purity Foaming 3-in-1 Cleansing Gel. This even removed my waterproof mascara without too much foam in my eyes! The smell reminded me of a witch hazel. The 3 oz size is 10$, available at Sephora.
  1. TIP: Always ask for Samples at cosmetic stores and counters (like Sephora, Ulta, Clinique, MAC) don’t leave without one!
Mascara: Buy Your Favorite Mascara on Sale! Get extra of ones you like to keep in a drawer for Back-Up In your Make Up Collection Mascara EXPIRES the fastest of all makeup! Throw it out after 2 or 3 months.

  1. TIP: Keep Mascara, and All of your Makeup in a bag in a cool-dry place. Don’t let it heat up in your Car, or Over-Pump the wand to expose Product to air! These things help Eye-Infection causing BACTERIA to get into your makeup, and that can get into your eye! Gross! If it has a bad smell- it is a sign to throw it out and get a fresh new one! Also; Practice good Makeup Hygiene—! (Possible Topic for Next Video?)
**Maybelline’s Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara (7.77, amazon.com. 4.89, sale at Harmon’s) In Classic Black & Glam Brown. The wide bristles on the brush help catch all of the lashes! The colors are very similar.
  1. TIP: Apply & Let It DRY! Applying one ‘coat’ of mascara to the lashes and letting them dry; waiting before applying another coat helps keep lashes clump-free and naturally pretty! Less is more!
*Almay 1 Coat Dial-Up in 02 Black (8.49, Amazon.com. 5.99, Sale at Harmon’s) Almay is a Cruelty Free Brand! The wand on this is the new-Style Rubber-Kind. The bristles are shorter and get close to the root of the lash for a thin application and it looks just cool and scientific!
  1. TIP: Use this mascara when you’re wearing eye shadow! If you put Eye shadow on before Mascara, the Wand on this gets very close to the root of your lash, with the short bristles it wont cross over and leave black Product where it doesn’t belong!
Eye Pencils & Eye Markers NYX Haul
*NYX Long-lasting Eyebrow Makers (Harmon’s 9.99) I Cant Live Without These! They only come in two shades, though! "Medium" the lighter brown & “Deep" the darker brown. They are the same shape as the Super-Skinny Eye Marker in Carbon Black (9.99, Harmon’s) So, These Eyebrow Makers are Multi-Purpose as Eyeliners!
  1. TIP: The Shape of the entire tool makes applying winged-eyeliner in a pinch. It is like drawing with a marker the exact shape you want, and it isn’t a clumping or thick product- it completely embodies the name “Marker" it looks light and natural.
*NYX Slide On Glide On Eyeliner Pencil in Pure White (7.99, Ulta.com) Apply Product gently to the inner corner of the eye, with a freshly sharpened tip to make Eyes Pop! This is a thin pencil! Many people use the NYX Jumbo Milk Pencil for this eye-brightening technique (4.49, Ulta.com) That is a thick pencil! BUT: What is the Difference Between the Thicknesses of the Pencils? The Slide On is more Bangs for your Buck! As a Wood pencil, I can sharpen it—- Keeping it hygienic. It can last up to 3 YEARS! Sadly, The Jumbo Pencil isn’t really a Pencil at all because it’s body is Plastic! You can’t sharpen it, and there is barely any Product at all! It’s a *Womp* to me.
  1. TIP: Brightening the eye with light is a helpful trick after a *Wild Night Out* to liven sleepy eyes and make them bright!
*NYX Eye Brow Shaper(4.49, Ulta) It’s just a Clear Wax pencil to slick Stray Brows in place! This is a thick pencil.
  1. TIP: Apply Last! If you apply this Product before Filling in your Brows, no Product will Stick to Skin over Wax!
Thick & Thin Wood Pencil Sharpening is essential to good makeup applications! Every Girl needs a Dual-Sized Makeup Sharpener in her Kit! Don’t Ever Use an Average Graphite-Pencil Sharpener with your Make Up! It is Un-Hygienic! Instead of buying the special NYX 2-in1 Sharpener (4.49, Ulta.com) I found a plain duo-sharpener in Harmon’s on sale for a buck! (Okay, I lied! 1.19 before tax!)
TIP: Put pencils in a cold place, like the Refrigerator before sharpening, along with the sharpener! It helps keep the product solid to avoid Breaking inside the Pencil! Always clean the Sharpener. If the tip of the Pencil tip breaks inside the Sharpener make sure to completely clean out the entire left over product to get a clean and sharp point on your tool. Applying making with Dull Points on Tools Makes A Sloppy Application and therefore Less Pretty Makeup!
Lips:

*EOS Pink Strawberry Sorbet (3.49, Ulta.com / 2.99 Harmon’s/ 1.99 Sale at Harmon’s) It’s Clear and Plain when you look at it and comes in a variety of different colors! All the products are identically moisturizing and flavorful!
TIP: Price-Check before buying Lip Balm or other products that are sold more generically at many stores. Each store’s List Price and Sales are different!

All about makeup

  1. The most flattering nail shape is not long or short or square, it's "squoval" -- not quite square and not quite oval. Get the look yourself by filing nails into a shape that mirrors the curve of your nail base. Square tips can make fingers look chubby, according to nail guru Deborah Lippmann in InStyle Magazine.
  2. To ensure your nails are the same length after filing, line each nail up with its counterpart.
  3. Don't shake the nail polish bottle, instead roll it between your palms. This mixes the polish without causing air bubbles.
  4. Before polishing clean nails, soak a cotton ball in nail polish remover and swipe across nails. This will remove any excess oils or soap than can cause peeling once polish is applied.
  5. One trick for applying nail polish: Hold the brush between the thumb and middle finger while resting your forefinger on the top of the cap.
  6. To get the best results, apply thin layers. Start with a thin layer of basecoat, then apply a thin layer of polish down the middle then one on the left and one on the right. After the first coat dries for a couple minutes, repeat, then follow with a thin layer of topcoat.
  7. Once your pedicure or manicure is complete, run an orangewood stick dipped in nail polish remover along either side of nail to fix any mistakes.
  8. Speed up the drying process by aiming a blow-dryer at toes (set on cool) for a minute at a time. Be sure to keep the dryer at least 12 inches from your feet.
  9. Gotta leave the house before your pedicure is dry? Apply cuticle oil over the polish. This will keep anything from sticking to your polish. See my list of the best cuticle creams.
  10. Stained nails? Remove the yellow easily by following the directions in How to Get Rid of Nail Stains.
  11. For an extra spa feeling to your home pedicure, nuke a damp towel in the microwave for a couple minutes, slather feet in moisturizer and wrap them in the warm towel.

Protecting Your Manicure

  1. A fresh swipe of topcoat every other day on your manicure and once a week on your pedicure will keep the polish from chipping. Check out 8 Secrets to Making Your Manicure Last Longer.
  2. When it comes to chipped polish, a nail buffer is your best friend. Repair a chip by smoothing the ragged edges with a buffer (the more smooth the chip is, the better the fix is). Fill in the chip with polish. Once it's dry, apply a coat over the entire nail.
  3. Don't file nails after a shower, when they are too soft. File in one direction only to prevent tears.
  4. For a pedicure, use a special pedicure nail clipper made for clipping toenails. The straight-edge works better for feet because they don't allow nails to become curved, which can lead to painful ingrown nails (been there, done that). You can round the edges slightly with a file.
  5. Since cotton balls can leave behind fuzzies, consider a cotton band like Miss Webril (about $6 at beauty stores) instead. For stubborn polish that stains, press the cotton on the nail for several seconds before wiping off. Don't be stingy with the polish remover, says Baek in InStyle magazine. The more nail remover you have on the cotton, the easier it will be to remove.
  6. Protect a manicure by wearing rubber gloves when cleaning and gardening.
  7. If you suffer from dry cuticles, keep cuticle oil in your bag or on your desk at all times. Cuticle oils tend to be more effective than creams.
